Welcome to Deckers Marketing, Indianapolis’ newest marketing venture.

I’ve been in sales, marketing, and PR for 15 years. I learned search engine optimization back when it was something people barely paid attention to, and you could do in 5 minutes. Now it’s a full-time job, and entire companies are created to do it.

I started marketing on the web in 1998, when I lived up in Syracuse, Indiana. I took a reflective insulation product from less than 5% of sales to nearly 50% of sales in 4 years. I did it with $40, a copy of Bob Bly’s Copywriting Secrets, and as many SEO articles as I could get my virtual hands on. While I spent a lot of my time driving around Indiana, trying to get lumber yards to buy the stuff, my biggest successes came from the web, and using as many guerilla marketing techniques as I could think of.

(I’d actually still be in Syracuse, selling reflective insulation, if our office manager hadn’t embezzled from us. Remind me to tell you about it sometime.)

Since then, I’ve counted on the power of the Interweb and its giant tubes (that’s a Senator Ted Stevens (R – AK) reference) as a way to build community, create commerce, and communicate with people all over the world.

I’ve used the Internet to help launch a national toy recall (ask me the story about this sometime. I’ll turn it into a blog post), to be a small part of Indiana’s largest online community, and to publish my own writing.

Now I’m using it to help me start my own marketing business. I focus on marketing communication – writing, blogging, SEO – for other agencies and small businesses. I also do contract/part-time marketing for those companies who don’t want to hire a marketing professional, but still need someone to build websites, blog, create brochures, and attend tradeshows.
