I’ve been a writer for more than 15 years, and have written nearly everything: brochures, web copy, white papers, newspaper articles, newspaper columns, press releases, speeches (including speeches for two U.S. Congressional Campaigns), and radio and stage plays. I’ve had seven radio plays produced in the U.S. and Canada, and won the Best Comedy for the 2005 Frank and Katrina Basile Emerging Playwrights Competition.
I have been in marketing since 1994, working for different small businesses. I’ve done sales, marketing, and PR for companies in agriculture, construction, computer software, direct mail. I also worked as the Risk Communication Director (crisis communications) for the Indiana State Department of Health.
It was during my time in the construction arena that I learned the power of web marketing and search engine optimization. We were literally minutes away from dropping our reflective insulation product, rFoil, because sales were so low. Instead, I got a reprieve and launched an rFoil website, and started marketing it directly to home owners. I spent $40 on a search engine monitoring software package to see how we placed on all the major search engines (we hit the top 5 within 2 months), but other than that, I didn’t have a budget to spend.
Since then I have focused on blogging and search marketing, publishing my own Laughing Stalk humor blog, and freelancing other corporate blogs, marketing copy, and speeches for clients around Indianapolis. I also give presentations and talks on blogging and social media for small businesses and nonprofits, and am available to speak to your organization or conference.
